The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
June 16, 2006 at 11:25 pm | In In Theaters | Leave a CommentRock Fist Up! This movie kicks ass.
Okay Tokyo Drift has a little something for all the gearheads. It starts with a high school kid, Sean, a regular gearhead having some problems with the football team. There is a great race through a developing suburb (which you all know how I feel about those) that destroys lots of stuff. Thus Sean is shipped to his father who live walking distance from Shibuya.
When Sean shows up at his father's apartment, well I don't want to give away the movie, but I laughed really hard. It reminded me of some of my friend's places and the nefarious things that they did.
Sean meets up with Twinkie who, of course, shows him the racing scene. Thus he learns about drifting and the plot kicks in or something. I loved it that he completely trashed a car in his first race because he didn't know what he was doing.
I think I liked this movie so much because it was more of the Japan that I knew, as opposed to the Japan shown in Lost in Translation. I knew high school kids who were out all hours doing god knows what and recording it all on their phones. The fashions and way of life was familiar. Hell, I knew people who had to leave town because of Yakuza. Did I know any racerboys? No. I was in another subculture there-the surfing one. It's the racerboys cousin culture. I was the person who would point out the tricked out cars to my mates when we were in Shinjuku. Hell I recognized some of the highways they filmed on. Do I expect everyone to like this movie as much I as did? No. It's like the Dukes of Hazzard lots of fun.
Oh, and for the Cowboy Bebop fan this guy would so play the live action Spike.
